Patterns For Pirates – Go To Jacket (Women’s)

Happy Thursday! It’s almost the end of the week! Today my post has way too many pictures – so enjoy my face! Blog photos are so awkward and ignore my Resting Bitch Face.

Today I’m bringing you the Go To Jacket (Women’s) from Patterns For Pirates. I know I’ve made a ridiculous amount of P4P patterns but I just can’t help myself. They are really good at creating cute designs with great instructions. But I do feel like everytime I make something, there is a little something I would change. Nothing wrong with the company, just personal preferences like where neckbands should hit or how small and goofy this hood looks on when up and zipped (pictures later in this post).

I notice everything the owner makes fits so perfectly, but for me things are always off a little bit. When I check my measurements it puts me in bust M, waist XL and hips L (36-32-40). Anytime I make a P4P I make M bust and grade to L in both the waist and hips. So already I’m sizing down a bit. Even this time, I should have sized down more, because it’s kinda big.

Maybe I just like my clothes super fitted? This is a jacket – so it’s probably me just being a pain in the ass. Also, this is the tunic length, which is super convenient in covering your bum.

I made the black jacket with cotton/lycra Harry Potter fabric from JoAnn. The mix is 95% cotton/5% lycra so maybe it’s just bigger since the fabric has good recovery and stretch? So I made it in a sweatshirt fabric that I bought from The Fabric Fairy which has barely any stretch. Sidenote: The Fabric Fairy is an amazing resource, ships quickly and has TONS of cute swim prints. Also, they had this amazing Harajuku Lovers print which is actually from Gwen Stefani and TFF managed to get the extra rolls. I legit spent all my money getting yards upon yards of it.

This version is in the regular waist length. Once again, it’s a little bigger than what I like. My goal is to wear clothing that doesn’t make me look larger than I actually am. I already have enough insecurities from gaining weight thanks to my Hashimoto’s disease.

So this one is a little too large still. I am super obsessed with this Harajuku print though – omg! The sweatshirt fleece is so comfortable and the Jamaican colors are life.

Let’s move on from the sizing for a minute and the hood. I just don’t get it. I actually added 1″ to the top width, which means I also added 1″ to the length, yet it’s still so tiny. I guess it’s called a “scuba” hood. To me it’s just awkward and too high up on my chin, then again I have rounded shoulders – so maybe it’s a personal problem.

I was damn determined to get this jacket to work. I love wearing jacket/hoodies of this type and have been looking for the perfect pattern. I thought maybe I could alter this enough to be my everything.

On this one I made a straight Medium. The fabric is also Harajuku Loves from TFF and is French Terry. The bust is my suggested size, the waist is sized down 2 sizes and the hips are sized down 1. I lowered the chin portion of the hood 3/4″and added 2″ to the sleeve cuff line and arm cuffs I added 5″ (I did this to all the jackets). I also had to add length on the chin guard.

The fit on this one is much better! I’m super happy about that. The only thing that drives me nuts is the zipper on the chin guard kinda choking me and rubbing on my chin. But I think that’s just me being annoying. The hood is much better.

Overall, I’ll use this pattern again. I feel like it’s almostĀ exactly what I want. Do you have a favorite jacket/hoodie pattern? Let me know in the comments. This pattern also comes in Men’s and Kid’s. I’m debating on trying the kids for Nico. Speaking of him:

Also, if you haven’t entered my giveaway yet – DO IT! Part of me was hoping no one would enter, so I could have an extra copy of the book – but that is just me being a hoarder. There’s still a week and a half and lots of tries for entries – so get to it! Happy 6 year blogiversary to me!

  1. It sounds like the pattern is problem. Have you tried Jalie patterns hoodie? Their patterns are very well drafted.

    1. I’m wondering if it is the pattern… it very well could be. I have only made 1 Jalie pattern (and half of another). Honestly that 1 I made, I made it 10 times! I loved it! I was going to try the New Horizons Summit hoodie next but I’ll check out Jalie too. I believe their patterns are top-notch.
