Mad Men Dress Challenge – Complete!

As mentioned before I am taking part in Julia Bobbin‘s Mad Men Dress Challenge and … I’m finished! I finished early because I wanted to wear the outfit for Easter – and it seemed to be a hit. I’m really really happy with how it turned out and proud of myself for all the hard work.

I chose Trudy’s skirt/jacket combo from this picture:

I found the perfect fabric at Jo-Ann Fabric, it’s an amazing sateen (98% cotton/2% spandex) by Daytime Drama. I went back to get more for future projects but they were all out πŸ™ I’ll be hunting it down either online or in another store – it has a great high quality feel and the perfect stretch.

I first made my own pattern and then a muslin for the jacket but it wasn’t turning out exactly how I wanted, so I took Butterick’s B5647 jacket pattern and manipulated it. I say it turned out really great! The hardest part was the piping, lining everything up perfect was driving me mad but I’m so proud that I was able to do it and do it so nicely!

I used Gertie’s Pencil Skirt for the skirt and lined it with a nice cream satin. I swear I love her Pencil Skirt pattern so much, I highly recommend it.

I lined the inside of the jacket, the back with the cream satin and the front with the polka dot fabric. I was going to line the sleeves but truthfully, I got lazy LOL Either way, it’s still amazing and I’m happy!

I finished this just in time to wear it to the family’s house for Easter:

I also made the dog a gorgeous tie to match my outfit… mainly because I’m insane and that person obsessed with their dog.

  1. Dang girl friend…you look so good. Love it and looks good on you..so happy for you Hun…you rock…love u mom

  2. Wow you are on fire! This is such an awesome mad men outfit I love it!! I am so wanting to copy this. Love the piping and the pattern you fixed looks perfect! So pretty another amazing outfit!

    1. Thanks Erin πŸ™‚ The piping was really hard to get lined up just right on the seams, up until this I had only piped pillows – so this was much different!

  3. OMG, I love it! It’s such a lovely outfit to copy in the first place and you’ve done it beautifully! I love the piping, I want to try that on my mad men dress too – I hope it works out as well as yours! Super hot!

    1. I have faith that yours would work out great – everything you post is always awesome πŸ™‚ Thank you <3

  4. Hi Amy, it’s been awhile since I checked your site out, and I was happy to see your new projects.
I always loved the tailored look and you are really doing well with your outfits.
    Hope everyone is doing well.
    Love ya

    1. Thank you! I want to learn how to tailor even better – so I can have great structured outfits πŸ™‚

  5. OMG! That is fantastic! I haven’t sewn many jackets yet. I started taking Gertie’s startlet suit jacket course at Craftsy and then got frustrated and quit. They have since stopped offering the course, so maybe I should try a different suit jacket again. If I could get your results, I would totally try! Bravo!

    1. Thank you πŸ™‚ I didn’t know she ever had a jacket course on there? Too bad it’s not there anymore I’d love to take it. I just ordered her bombshell dress course and will be trying it out in a few weeks – after I get this shelf bust dress how I want LOL I based this jacket off Butterick’s B5647 pattern – maybe give that a go? Although I didn’t make the exact jacket they have on there so I dunno how theirs will turn out? A great suit jacket is hard to come by though!!

  6. Amy, I want you to make me something! I need a cute summer dress. You have what you made in your closet and now I want it in mine!
    LOve IT!

  7. I SEW want to do one of these. I hope the gals that originated it do it again AND that I read about it in time to participate versus almost two years later like this comment I’m leaving. Sign.

    1. I’m sure they will, it’s become an annual thing. I remember when I did it, it was around Easter time – so it should be coming up in the next few months. It was a blast to do! I may try to participate again this year πŸ™‚
