Patterns For Pirates – Boundless Dress

Sometimes you love a pattern, so you decide to make a different view, because you’ll obviously love that one too, right? Nope. This dress is cute and it looks nice, but it’s just not my style. I’m sure it will grow on me but I typically wear fuller skirts, maxi skirts or pencil skirts. (Side note: sorry the photography is so blurry, we were trying to hurry before the grocery and it was starting to rain and I couldn’t figure out my settings quick enough)

This is the Boundless Dress from Patterns For Pirates. There are a few different options for this one and if you remember I made the empire waist maxi length two summers ago. I LOVE that dress and still wear it all the time even though I made the nursing version. My measurements are 36-31-40 so I made Medium graded to Large graded to Medium.

I’ve been super obsessed with the Colette Moneta lately (I’ll be blogging about it in detail soon, I promise!) but wondered, how many dresses can you have of the same pattern? I needed to stop making so many! I decided to try out the Boundless in the natural waist bodice and knee length skirt. I went with sleeves since that’s what the Moneta has.

When I made the knee length it was WAY too long for me and looked kinda frumpy. I decided to shorten it without using the pattern as a guide. I put it on, figured “ehh, this looks about right, f it” and cut. I cut off 5″ and that was a bit much. The other change I made was adding strips to the back because without them, the sleeves were falling down and it was driving me bonkers. This is actually my favorite part of the dress.

Overall, it’s a good pattern and all but I just don’t think it’s for me. I’ve seen a lot of other people make it (that’s a big part of why I made mine) and they look amazing. I did get a compliment on it at the grocery store, so that’s a win! I’m sure I’ll wear it a lot to the pool as my cover-up. Maybe I should just cut the waist off and wear it as a shirt…hmmm?

Outtake!

And this is the best picture out of the bunch!

  1. Please don’t shorten it to a top, it looks fabulous on you!! And I agree with you on the straps at the back, they’re brilliant – and I LOVE the fabric!
