I love cardigans but my husband always gives me slack about them. He says they look like old Grandpa sweaters. When I saw McCalls 6803 Misses’/Men’s Cardigan I knew I’d be making it, screw his opinion! (sorry honey!)
My measurements were 33-28-38 so I cut a size Small. I think that was the perfect size. This pattern is unisex, so it’s not meant to be very form fitting. My fabric was a knit so it had a bit of stretch and movement, but not a lot. I did add 1 inch to the length of the sleeves. (Monkey arms never have long enough sleeves!)
The pattern itself is very easy to make and I didn’t really have any issues, except the interfacing on the band around the neck/buttonholes. I think maybe I was supposed to cut the interfacing a different direction because I couldn’t stretch it to fit properly. I had to add about 7 inches more on the neckband 🙁 But in the end you really can’t tell and it doesn’t look too bad, just a bit puckery. I believe it was direction #36, next time I will double check and follow the directions better, oops.
Other than that hiccup things went smoothly! The cardigan is very comfortable.
I love pockets and these call for edge stitching. I had never used an edge stitching foot until this project (yeah, I know!!) and wow did it make a difference! Totally made my life easier and looks amazing in the end.
I also love that the cardigan is long on my waist. I have a long torso and typically have to alter for that, but this time around I didn’t have to do anything and it turned perfect. Pretty much covers up my bum.
I would like to make a womens cardigan next time though. I like my clothing to be a bit more form fitting and flattering. In the end though, great pattern, super simple and accents my winter wardrobe.
All that said, I’m sick of winter! It’s been pretty brutal this year and I want sunshine back and pretty summer dresses!

I am considering using this pattern with a woven fabric. Not sure how the result will be given the pattern suggests using knits. On the knit subject, did you consider using a fusible stretch interfacing?
I’m not sure how it would look with a woven. It is drafted to be baggy – or that’s just the big 4 having massive amounts of ease! I didn’t think of fusible stretch interfacing until a couple weeks later – duh LOL Oh well, live and learn!
