Gertie’s Pencil Skirt

A few weeks ago I bought Gertie’s New Book For Better Sewing and have finished my first garment: The Pencil Skirt. The book itself has all kinds of great tips and tricks about sewing and focuses on vintage, which happens to be my favorite.

The Pencil Skirt was very straight-forward and turned out great. It’s really difficult to see detail in the pictures since the skirt is black. I tried to play around with color settings on a few to show more of the structure. I used a black stretch sateen made up of 98% cotton and 2% spandex. I didn’t make a muslin first, so there are a few parts that aren’t as great as I’d hoped for but it still turned out very nice. This is only the 3rd zipper I’ve ever done, so I didn’t challenge myself and try the lapped zipper. I do plan on making this skirt a few more times (in all different colors), so I will give the lapped zipper a proper try.

I didn’t change too much about the pattern, just the zipper and I did add the boning. I was very happy with how professional the hem came out looking. Since the fabric was stretch and I wanted it really tight I had to keep taking it in – it’s definitely tight now! The fit of the skirt is extremely flattering for all body shapes. I’d highly recommend this pattern. The instructions are simple but reading the chapters before really will help the process goes smoother.
